Across South Africa, gender-based violence continues to deeply affect women and girls, with alarming rates of abuse, rape, and femicide reported each year.
Beyond the statistics are real lives\u2014women whose safety, dignity, and opportunities are threatened by inequality and harmful social norms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBehind every number is a woman whose voice must be heard, whose life must be valued, and whose rights must be protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Yet, amid the pain, voices of change are rising. Across communities, people are uniting to challenge violence and advocate for justice, safety, and respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udc9c The Power of Purple: A Wave of Digital Protest<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In recent weeks, South Africans have begun changing their profile pictures to purple \u2014 a symbol of solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence.
This initiative, led by the organization Women for Change, is part of a broader movement culminating in a national shutdown on 21 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On that day, women and community will withdraw from paid and unpaid work to demand that GBV and femicide be declared a national disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The color purple has a long history in the struggle for women\u2019s rights \u2014 representing resistance, courage, and empowerment.
By painting social media purple, participants are creating a digital wave of protest, echoing across South Africa and beyond \u2014 especially as the nation prepares to host the G20 Leaders\u2019 Summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
